Over the past months, at Pylon Network we have been preparing for a year of change, innovation and hard work!

It is undoubtedly a very exciting period.

With the EU having introduced a series of regulations and directives (e.g. “The Winter Package”) for all member states and at the same time, setting the ambitious target of becoming the first carbon neutral economy by 2050 (as part of the EU Green Deal) the ambitions are definitely high.

We see collective self-consumption as a catalyst for a participatory energy transition and a decarbonized energy sector.

For that reason we have launched a series of educative videos on this new entry in the energy market: to explain - in a simple way - what collective self-consumption means, what it means for the energy market and how we, at Pylon Network, are developing technologies and tools to help their operations become more simple, more efficient and transparent.

An Introduction to Collective Self-Consumption

When talking about self-consumption most people think an installation of solar panels on the roof of their home — what is also known as a “prosumer” (producer & consumer).

In our first video we offered an introduction to the concept of collective self-consumption, which brings some fundamental changes in terms of how locally produced electricity is distributed and shared locally, among several users (consumers) - and not only one, as in the prosumer’s case.

Furthermore, we explained the main differences and benefits that are being introduced by these kind of schemes and how, combined with the tools that Pylon Network is developing, can offer financial advantages by minimizing the electricity exports and hence, maximizing self-consumption within the energy community.

Collective Self-Consumption & Blockchain Technology

Our second video, is focusing on the implementation of blockchain technology in the use case of collective self-consumption and the added value it can offer.

As we explained in our first video, collective self-consumption can be a catalyst for the energy transition however, there are still some barriers that need to be addressed in order to reach its full potential and be implemented at a massive scale.

The root of the problem is associated with energy data: their availability, accessibility and the data exchange processes that are in place.

In our second video, we break down these problems and focus on how Pylon Network’s Neutral Energy Data Hub (powered by our open-source blockchain technology) is designed to solve them.
